The Butterfly House, Apollo Bay (in-progress)
A new and modern contemporary residential dwelling on a moderately sloping site in the beautiful coastal township of Apollo Bay.
The scheme folds in centrally to provide North facing solar access, while creating space between the dwelling and only directly adjoining owner. At each end of the building the ceiling gently raises to the mountain and sea views, creating an uplifting environment to habitate.
A central Entry, Stair and Pool divide the 2-storey home into 4 zones. 1) Living, Dining, Kitchen and deck with outdoor BBQ at the upper-level sit to the East of the floor plan, with views out to the protected ocean bay and along the coast. 2) Master Bedroom and Ensuite, Office, Guest accommodation and Pool Room opening to a North facing Terrace are positioned to the West of the floor plan at Level 2. 3) Children’s Bedrooms, Rumpus, Gym and Bathroom are grouped on the oceanside at Ground Level. 4) A triple Garage with EV charging stations, Storage, Laundry, Cellar, Plant room, Guest Bedroom and Bathroom sit gently into the landscape West of the Lift.
South West facing timber screening limits the exposure to the setting Summer sun, while providing privacy to the residents from the foot traffic of the street adjoining. Rammed earth walls ground the dwelling, with painted compressed sheeting forming the main material of the envelope. The home will be largely self-sufficient via a 20kW Photovoltaic system with Tesla battery bank. 2 water tanks are buried within the front setback and will provide sufficient water for the garden.
The residence is functional and forms a creative design response to the site.
