50’s Twist

50's Twist

50s Twist House, Jan Juc 2007 - 2009

The 50s Twist House is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic Australian coastal home — its name a nod to both its mid-century influences and the subtle angular gestures embedded in its plan. Set into a gently sloping treed and grassed site in Jan Juc, the dwelling offers a layered response to lifestyle, landscape, and legacy.

This two-storey home is designed around the dual needs of family life and leisure. The ground floor unfolds around a series of social spaces — including Living, Lounge, Rumpus, and Kitchen zones — with generous openings that connect to the north-facing pool, deck, and terrace. A shed is tucked discreetly to the rear of the site, elevated above concealed water tanks integrated beneath the driveway, affirming a practical and resource-conscious approach.

SKETCH

Above, three Bedrooms and two Bathrooms offer retreat and privacy, with framed views to the surrounding greenery. The upper floor is set back from the ground level to reduce visual bulk and bring a sense of lightness to the street-facing form.

Materiality plays a central role in expressing the house’s character. Vertical shiplap weatherboards are paired with dry-stacked stone and rendered blockwork to provide both texture and permanence. Timber fascias, screens, and custom seating in oiled Spotted Gum soften the modern geometry, adding richness and warmth. Earth-toned finishes and natural anodised aluminium window frames ensure the home settles comfortably into its coastal bushland setting. A Colorbond tray deck roof completes the ensemble — crisp and recessive, with minimal visual interruption.

Environmental considerations are embedded throughout the design. The orientation of the main living areas maximises access to northern light, while large eaves and adjustable screening protect from the summer sun. Ample operable glazing provides cross ventilation, reducing the need for mechanical cooling, while the use of durable and low-maintenance materials reinforces a long-term, low-impact footprint.

The 50s Twist House is grounded in its place and purpose — a modern coastal home that balances elegance with functionality, nostalgia with clarity, and indoor comfort with an enduring connection to its environment.
