House on the Hill

House on the hill

The House on the Hill, Jan Juc (2020-2022)

Set high on the rise in Jan Juc, House on the Hill takes in the shifting light and layered textures of its coastal bushland setting. Perched at the edge of the treetops, the home is designed to connect gently with its landscape — open to the long views, but anchored with warmth and protection.

The eastern façade is rhythmically articulated with highlight windows, shaded by deep eaves that temper the morning light and offer shelter through the seasons. Living spaces are elevated to the upper level, capturing views to the parkland canopy beyond. A quiet moment is created where the deck pulls back from the final glazed panel — a pause between inside and out.

In the living room, full-height windows softly mirror the surrounding trees, bringing movement and depth into the space. The kitchen frames views across the site to the park beyond, screened by existing boundary planting that adds privacy without disconnecting the home from its context.

Materiality is grounded and tactile: floors in Blackbutt timber bring a gentle warmth underfoot, balanced by honed 12mm porcelain benchtops in the kitchen. Joinery in Tasmanian timber veneer adds a layer of craftsmanship and detail throughout the living spaces.
